Oreos History
Oreos were introduced by the Nabisco company in 1912. Although it’s not clear who first designed the cookie, or even how the name “Oreo” came about, they were very similar to another cookies and cream biscuit at the time, called the Hydrox, which consisted of two chocolate cookies and a cream filling.
Today’s Oreo cookies were designed by Sam Porcello, who slightly modified the original recipe to create the snack we know and love.

These are the basic steps for making Oreo cookie balls. Refer to the full, printable recipe card below for detailed instructions.
Step 1: Add the Oreo and Crush
First, place 9 of the cookies in food processor and pulse to fine crumbs. Reserve for later use. Then, crush the remaining cookies into a fine powder, add softened cream cheese, and mix in a hand mixer until well blended.
Step 2: Roll
Roll the Oreo mixture into 42 balls, about one inch in diameter. You can also use a tablespoon cookie scoop to ensure uniform size. Melt the chocolate in the microwave, then use a spoon to dip the cookie dough balls into the melted chocolate with a fork, wipe excess on the edge of the bowl. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or wax paper, and allow the excess chocolate to drip off. Sprinkle the dipped balls with crushed Oreo cookie crumbs.
Step 3: Place the Oreo Balls on a baking sheet in the Fridge and Chill the Balls
Cover and refrigerate the balls for at least 1 hour, or until firm. Remove balls to an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three weeks. You can also freeze the balls for up to three months.
